8 methods to take a screenshot with Windows 10 or Windows 11

Windows 10 and Windows 11 offer a variety of options for taking a screenshot of an item on your computer screen.

We have compiled all the best ways to save your screen.

The Print Screen Button

To take a screenshot using Windows 10 or Windows 11 with the Print Screen key (PrtScn), you can use the Print Screen button. To capture the entire screen, press prtScn in the upper-right corner.

Windows 10 will save the screenshot to your clipboard. Copy the screenshot to any program that supports images, such as Microsoft Word and Paint.

Windows 11 will save your screenshot to the Screenshots directory by pressing PrtScn. If you are able to find the folder, click File Explorer and then click Pictures.

To take a screenshot in Windows 10 (and save it automatically), press. The screen will dim and a screen shot of the screen will be saved to the Screenshots directory.

Windows 11 users can save a screenshot of their entire screen by pressing Windows key + PRtScn. Screenshots will save the image.

Alt + Print Screen

Alt + PRtScn will capture the active window. Windows 10 will save the clipboard copied to your clipboard. To save it, you will need to copy it to another program. Windows 11 will save both the screenshot and copy it to your Screenshots folder.

Windows 10 Snip & Sketch

Windows 10’s Snip & Sketch makes taking screenshots easy on Windows.

Snip & stitch can be activated by pressing WindowsKey + Shift+S. A mini-menu will appear at top. You can choose to capture your entire screen in either a rectangular or freeform format.

Choose how you want to take a picture with these Snip and Skitch options:

Once you’ve taken the screenshot, it will automatically be copied to your clipboard. A preview notification will appear in the lower right corner.

To open Sketch and Snip, click the preview notification. You can save, share, edit, delete, or modify the screenshot using any of the drawing software.

Windows 11 – The Snipping Tool

Windows 10 comes with the Snipping Tool but it’s not the most effective screenshot tool. Windows 11 brings a major update to this Snipping Tool which allows for custom screenshots.

You can start the Snipping tool in Windows 11 by searching the name or pressing Shift+ S. This toolbar lets you take a full screen capture, a freeform or rectangle.

After you have taken your screenshot, it will be automatically copied to the clipboard. This will allow you to share your screenshot as soon as it is taken.

The Game Bar

Windows apps and games can have the Game Bar overlay. You can take screenshots or record videos with the Game Bar overlay. Press Windows Key G to open it.

Quick tip: If the Game Bar doesn’t open, search “Game bar settings” and toggle on “Record video clips and screenshots and broadcast with Game Bar.” “

Click on the camera icon in the overlay menu to capture a full screen screenshot. To do this, press and hold the record button. Clicking the microphone icon will give you the option to include audio.

All screenshots, video clips, and images captured by Game Bar will be saved to the Videos >Captures directory as PNG. The Game Bar can also show all captures by clicking on the “Show all Captures” button beneath the recording and screenshot buttons.

Power + Volume Up

Take screenshots of Windows 10 with a Microsoft Surface Device by pressing the Power Button + the Volume Down Button. The screen will dim, and the screenshot will be saved to the Pictures > Screenshots directory.

Please note: To take a screenshot of a Surface 3 or older computer, use the Windows Logo + Volume Down Button.

3rd-party screenshot apps Windows

If you’re not satisfied with the Windows built in methods, third-party screenshot tools might be worth your consideration. Each has its own offerings.

  • Lightshot is a free tool that lets you quickly share photos to social media. You can also edit the images.
  • Another tool that is free allows you to edit and customize your screenshots. You can also capture scrolling pages.
  • You can create animated GIFs or full-page photos with the premium version. Any photo taken during this time will be watermarked.
